Sun Yat-Sen Garden’s Veteran Volunteer

SHARE

2011 marked the 25th anniversary of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, a serene landmark in Vancouver’s Chinatown where 92-year-old Julian Law has volunteered for the past 18 years.

Law, also known as “Uncle Julian,” says his favourite part of guiding tours is “meeting people and making memories.” One of his most memorable moments was when an elderly woman came to the garden and fawned over Law, giving him kisses on the cheek.

Law believes that visiting the garden is a learning experience. “There is wisdom throughout [the garden],” he says. “You learn just by being here.” He adds that when you leave the garden, the pine trees will whisper to you, thanking you for the visit. “Luck comes with nature,” he says with a grin.
